Meet the team

Meet the team at Piha Surf Academy, each member have a different background in their surfing journey, and have come together to provide you with a well rounded service. From experienced surfers, internationally qualified instructors to personal training, yoga and nutrition, our intention is to ensure the best for surfers by including crucial knowledge and support in our programmes.

Our staff training and programmes have been carefully considered by our psychology and educationally qualified team member to guarantee the topmost service and instruction.

Felipe our head coach has an amazing enthusiasm for all things surfing. From being a young boy hooked from the feeling of catching that first wave to an experienced instructor, Felipe now wants others to enjoy and experience the fun of surfing. Felipe’s experience and positive vibe ensure informative and engaging lessons perfect to support others in learning to surf and improving technique. Felipe studied business and holds a level two instructors licence.

Favourite break? Piha

Why surfing? I like surfing because it’s simple but complex at the same time, the fulfilling feeling of contentment and freedom with only a board.


Paul is a fun team member with an engaging and enthusiastic coaching style, he ensures everyone always has a great time in the water. Paul fills in for some of our lessons and is always keen to give advice.

Favourite break? Shippies

Favourite moment? My favourite session was in Lombok, we went to a break called Mawi it was a perfect day surfed all afternoon on empty 8ft waves with the sun setting on the horizon.


Adam grew up surfing Piha’s amazing waves. His local knowledge and years of experience make him a great member of the team. Adam loves to see people progress and have a great time surfing. Adam is about to head to Pipeline to get amongst the excitement of the Pipeline masters. Hopefully we will see him back in our lessons soon. Keep an eye on our blog to get updates from Pipeline.

Chelsea is another local team member, she is a keen surfer and loves seeing people have fun in the water. Chelsea has a degree in education, a postgraduate in educational psychology and is now working towards her masters in psychology. Chelsea helps develop high quality programmes and support for innovative and engaging lessons.

Favourite break? Piha definitely, there always seems to be a fun wave somewhere on the beautiful coastline.

Favourite moment? Would have to be surfing in Bali, being able to take your board and surf different breaks is an amazing feeling.


Nick has been surfing for over 10 years and instructing for over two. Nick has not only instructed in New Zealand but also worked with children in Australia’s Gold Coast. With a diploma in outdoor recreation and leadership and a range of experience Nick has a fun and engaging approach to surf instruction.

Favourite break? My favourite break would have to be Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast. My favourite break in New Zealand, I am going to have to keep that a secret :p

Travelled? Yes to places like Bali, Lombok, Samoa, Tonga, Fiji, Australia and more. I hope to add to my list soon!


Javier is an amazing yoga instructor that works within and enhances some of our surf programmes. Javier is originally from Chile but has now made New Zealand home for the last 9years. He started his yoga practice back in 2008, with a passion for combining yoga and the outdoors Javier has now joined the team to provide enhanced high performance training for surfers. His engaging sessions are one of a kind.
