Please contact us if you have any other questions!

Do you operate every day of the year?

Yes, we do operate all year around. The only reason we would not operate on a specific date is due to extreme weather conditions making a surf session unsafe.

Is Piha a safe beach?

Piha is the safest beach on Auckland’s West Coast. There are very predictable rips and currents which our coaches are familiar with. A safety talk and detailed explanation of the beach dynamic is presented by our coaches at the very first session and reviewed constantly.

What is the coach to student ratio?

We strongly believe that personalised coaching is fundamental to develop the skill of surfing. Our coach to student ratio is 3:1 and we will never mix skill levels within the groups.

What surfboards and wetsuits do you provide?

At Piha Surf Academy we have an extensive quiver. 7’6” – 8’0” and 9’0” Gnaraloo Soft Tops, 7’10” NSP Funboards, 8’2” – 8’6” and 10’2” NSP Longboards and wide variety of short boards from 5’6” to 6’9”. Regarding wetsuits we provide 3/2mm Xcel and 3/2mm O’neil.

Are the instructors qualified?

All our coaches are Internationally qualified. Their license is recognised by the International Surfing Association (ISA), Surfing New Zealand and Water Safety New Zealand making sure we operate with the highest standards.

Are there any age restrictions?

We don’t have any age restriction. At Piha Surf Academy we have coached people as young as 4 years old up to 69 years old. We might recommend choosing a private lesson if we consider it would be more beneficial and productive for the student.

Can I bring my own board?

You are welcome to bring your own board. Level 4 surfers prefer to use their own boards but if you are a surfer between the level 1,2 and 3 the quiver we have at Piha Surf Academy is suitable. We will make sure you will be riding the appropriate board according to your surfing level.

How long are the coaching sessions?

All of our sessions are 90 minutes long. We have found through out years of experience that any shorter or longer than that is not as productive.

Do you coach advanced Surfers?

Yes we do coach advanced surfers, the coaching will be mainly drill training and video analysis. For more information on our 4 levels please check find your surfing level.

Do you cancel the sessions due to rain?

We do not cancel session due to rain. Often we have great surfing conditions and it is raining. The only time a session will be cancel is if there is a safety concern e.g very strong winds or lightning.

What if the waves are too small or too big?

We are lucky that New Zealand’s West Coast is very consistent regarding to swells. It is very unlikely the waves will be too small in Piha. If we have a large swell there is always a safe spot we can train and practice skill drills.

Can I wear glasses or contact lenses?

Quite a few people surf with contact lenses without any issues, in a very few occasions they have lost one.

Can I do more than one session a day?

Yes, if you join our surf camp you will be surfing twice a day for 90 minutes each session with a long break in between.

Are the locals friendly?
