Holidays with Piha Surf Academy

Holidays and Piha go together like fish and chips. Whether you're an Aucklander on a staycation or visiting from overseas, a surf lesson with Piha Surf Academy is one of the best ways to experience the West Coast. Piha is about 45 minutes' drive west of Auckland, with black sand, Lion Rock and waves for every level.
Can I learn to surf in just one holiday lesson?
Plenty of first-timers stand up in their very first lesson. In 2 hours we cover safety, the pop-up on the sand and then catching white-water waves with an instructor right there with you.
Which lesson suits a holiday?
Group surf lesson: $80 per person, 11am, ages 10+.
Private one-on-one lesson: $139, 9am.
Private group lesson: $120 per person, 2pm, for 2 to 6 friends or family with your own instructor.
Board and wetsuit hire: $45.
Every lesson runs for 2 hours with a soft-top board and wetsuit included, and lessons are by booking only.
What should I bring?
Togs, a towel, sunscreen and a water bottle. We supply the board and wetsuit. If you want to keep surfing after your lesson, board and wetsuit hire is $45.
Is Piha safe for holiday visitors?
Piha has strong rips, so always swim between the flags and never surf alone. Learning with local instructors who know the beach is the safest way to start.
